Why did Snape agree to being the defense against the dark arts teacher?

That was like suicide. I just finished the chapter when Dumbledore said it was cursed. Like, what the heck Dumbledore, he knew that job was cursed yet he gave it to him. Did Dumbledore tell the professor about it? Did Snape already know?
